Diabetes Care in Temple

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​A diagnosis of diabetes may raise questions. That’s where we come in. At Baylor Scott & White – Temple, we provide personalized care for people who have diabetes. It begins the moment you arrive, when one of our certified diabetes educators will meet with you to explore your lifestyle and help make a plan that will work for you.

If you’ve just been diagnosed with diabetes or if you have diabetes but have not previously taken diabetes education, we strongly encourage you to attend our Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) classes, recognized by American Diabetes Association. We’ll teach you AND your family everything you need in order to effectively self-manage your diabetes now and over the long term.

You’ll also discover you are not alone in our Diabetes Support Group, where you can spend time with others who understand and take part in educational programs from Baylor Scott & White – Temple’s diabetes experts.

Diabetes Self-Management Education Classes (DSME)

At Baylor Scott & White – Temple, our Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) classes are certified by the American Diabetes Association and designed to help those of you in the Temple and surrounding areas learn everything you need to know to successfully manage your diabetes. For people who have diabetes, knowledge is power. Monitoring and keeping blood sugar levels in the normal range are key for people who have type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes and pre-diabetes. Our certified diabetes experts, including a registered dietician and registered nurse, help empower participants to

  • Plan meals
  • Make better food choices at home and on the go
  • Use their own blood glucose monitor and interpret the results
  • Understand diabetes and its possible complications
  • And much, much more

Plan de estudios

The program consists of four classes, taken sequentially over a six month span in order to maximize your behavioral learning:

Class 1 (three hours) covers: symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, blood glucose monitoring and why it is important, food planning, physical exercise and carbohydrate counting.

Class 2 (two hours, begins two weeks after Class 1) covers: evaluating self-test results and skills, meter maintenance, glucose levels, strategies for food selection and portion control when eating away from home.

Class 3 (two hours, begins three weeks after Class 2) covers: review of all other topics, foot care skills, heart-healthy food choices, how diabetes and therapy change over time and evaluating glucose monitoring records.

Class 4 (one and a half hours, begins three months after Class 3) covers: developing problem-solving skills, stress and how it affects blood glucose control, diabetes and depression and specific needs identified by patients.

Location and Schedule​​

Classes are offered at three convenient area locations:

Temple Location: Baylor Scott & White Center for Diagnostic Medicine – Temple, 1605 S. 31st St., Temple, TX 76508. Frequency: all four classes are offered multiple times each week at morning, afternoon and evening times.

Calendar dates for Class 1 in Temple each month:

  • First and third Tuesdays, 8:30 a.m.
  • Second and Fourth Tuesdays, 1 p.m.

Waco Location: Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Hillcrest, 100 Hillcrest Medical Blvd., Waco, TX 76712. Freq​uency: all four classes are offered during the four Thursdays each month. 

Calendar dates for Class 1 in Waco each month:

  • First Thursdays, 9 a.m.

Killeen Location: Baylor Scott & White Clinic – Killeen, 3801 Scott & White Dr., Killeen, TX 76543. Frequency: all four classes are offered during the four Mondays each month.

Calendar dates for Class 1 in Killeen each month:

  • First Mondays, 8:30 a.m.
  • Second Mondays, 1 p.m.

To attend (for Patients): Patients should visit or contact their physician for a referral to our education classes.

To refer (for Providers): Providers should send referral through Epic as Ambulatory Diabetes Education.

Then, consider joining us for the Baylor Scott & White – Temple Diabetes Support Group. It’s free, monthly and no referral or registration is required. We host a variety of professional speakers and experts on the latest diabetes-related topics, trends and treatments.
