Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano Outpatient Services

Arrhythmia and heart rhythm services

Electrophysiology is the study and treatment of arrhythmias. Arrhythmias, also known as heart rhythm disorders, occur when there is a change in the normal rate or rhythm of the heartbeat. They are generally caused by abnormalities in the heart's electrical system. Arrhythmias can be complex medical conditions with effects ranging from annoying to life-threatening.

Once diagnosed with an arrhythmia, our team collaborates with you and your physician to develop an appropriate treatment approach. Although some arrhythmias can be managed by medication, others may require surgery.

When surgical intervention is required, our team performs surgery at our heart specialty hospital, Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano.

Cardiac arrhythmias we treat:

  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Atrial flutter
  • Atrioventricular block (also known as heart block)
  • Long QT syndrome
  • Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT)
  • Rhythm disorders related to heart failure
  • Premature atrial contraction
  • Sick sinus syndrome
  • Sinus tachycardia
  • Sinus bradycardia
  • Sudden cardiac death prevention
  • Ventricular fibrillation
  • Ventricular tachycardia

Innovators in care

Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano's electrophysiology lab was one of the first in the U.S. to use pressure-sensitive catheters to perform radiofrequency catheter ablation. Pressure-sensitive catheters provide real-time feedback regarding the amount of pressure being applied to the heart tissue during ablation, potentially increasing precision, quality and safety.

In addition, Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano's electrophysiology lab was the first facility in the world to upgrade to the EPOCH platform. The EPOCH system uses magnets to steer wire catheters into the most remote areas of the heart, uncovering hidden damage to tissue and providing a comprehensive look at the heart’s electrical anatomy.

We were also the first in the world to use multi-electrode mapping (MEM) software in concert with the EPOCH system. This technology may decrease procedure times and reduce the risk of harming healthy heart tissue.

Dedication to research and education

The specialists on our medical staff are training a new generation of physicians and teaching long-practicing physicians from around the globe the approaches and techniques for treating heart rhythm disorders.

Our electrophysiology (EP) lab was one of the first to implement the Odyssey Cinema Studio, a fully integrated, real-time information management system that promotes online education and collaboration by allowing physicians to remotely access live and recorded procedure data across the hospital system and around the world.

In addition, our specialists participate in various trials, including an atrial fibrillation study that compares medication to ablation to assess the risks and benefits.
