Wound Assessment and Treatment

​​​​​​​​​No wound is too minor or too serious for our physicians to treat, because each needs unique care and attention. Because our physicians are also surgeons, we are able to offer quality, specialized care. We provide a personalized treatment plan to minimize pain and discomfort and expedite healing.

Acute wounds are sudden, severe and short-term and can be caused by:

  • Abrasions, minor lacerations
  • Blunt trauma
  • Burns
  • Cellulitis
  • Crush injuries
  • Puncture wounds
  • Spider, insect, animal bites
  • Skin lesions
  • Surgical site infection
  • Surgical incision separation

Chronic wounds are ongoing, last longer than three months or come back regularly and can be caused by:

  • Infecciones
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Fistula draining
  • Lymphedema
  • Post-surgical non-healing
  • Gangrene
  • Ostomy complications
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Skin breakdown from incontinence and/or radiation treatment

Wound Assessment

A comprehensive wound evaluation includes a physical examination of the wound, assessment of other factors that may affect healing, assessment of infection, nutritional status and vascular supply. We also evaluate the patient’s understanding of and ability to care for their wounds and help arrange home care.

Based on the assessment, the team provides treatment, or combination of treatments, designed to achieve the best outcome. Several options and intervention techniques are available:

  • Care of complicated wounds associated with arterial insufficiency, diabetic neuropathy, venous disease and vascular disease
  • Bioengineered skin grafting
  • Incision, drainage of abscesses
  • Wound debridement
  • Treatment of burns, infected wounds and non-healing surgical wounds
  • Management of venous stasis ulcers​
