NEW! Lifeguard Training courses offered at the Baylor Tom Landry Health and Wellness Center are now offered in the Blended Learning format. There are two delivery methods available for the courses in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program—classroom and blended learning. The blended learning option combines online learning with in-person skill sessions conducted by a Red Cross-certified instructor. Participants in blended learning courses acquire the same knowledge and skills as those in traditional classroom training courses.
Prior to attending the first scheduled class session, students will need to independently complete the online portion of the lifeguarding course. Upon enrollment, students will receive a link via email that will direct them to the online portion of the Lifeguarding course. Students will be prompted to create an account within the Red Cross Learning Center and complete the online portion at their leisure before attending the scheduled in-person portion. Proof of completion must be brought to the first in-person session via one of the following methods or students will not be permitted to continue in the course:
Course Prerequisites
Entry into the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is strictly limited to those who meet the minimum age requirement and have successfully completed the prerequisite skills evaluation. Failure
to have attained the appropriate skill level could pose a safety threat to themselves and to others in the class. Participants in the Lifeguarding program must be 15 years of age on or before the last scheduled session of the course.
Prerequisite Skills
The prerequisite skills evaluation takes place at the start of every lifeguarding course,.
In an emergency, you have to be focused, prepared and confident in your skills. That’s why recertification is so important. Renew your American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED and Bloodborne Pathogens Training certifications at BTLFC, and you’ll always be ready to save a life.
Participants must be currently certified or have successfully completed an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course within the last two years. Once certifications have expired for more than 30 days, a full course must be taken again. Participants must also be able to pass the lifeguarding prerequisite skills evaluation again.
Studying in Advance is Highly Recommended
This is a fast-paced review course with a main focus on the hands-on skills of lifeguarding (CPR/AED/First Aid and Water Rescues). There will be limited time allocated to book review. Studying in advance ensures that participants get the most out of their recertification course and are better prepared to pass the written test. Not being prepared could result in a participant having to come back for additional training. The newest edition of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Manual (r. 2017) is available for free below. It is recommended that participants re-read the manual and complete the chapter review questions at the end of each chapter, paying special attention to parts of the manual pertaining to forgotten or brand new/revised content that came with the 2017 update.
To register for a class
In this course, instructor candidates learn to teach basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses including Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, and Aquatic Attraction Lifeguarding. Successful completion of this course earns participants an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certification and eligibility to teach the above Lifeguarding courses as well as the Waterpark skills module, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, Safety Training for Swim Coaches, Junior Lifeguarding, Bloodborne Pathogens Training, and more! This class is a great way to further your lifeguarding career.
Dates
Once we receive a student’s registration form and payment, the student will be emailed a link to register for the course within the American Red Cross Learning Center which will allow the student access to the online portion of the Lifeguarding Instructor course. When instructor candidates register for the Lifeguarding Instructor course through the American Red Cross Learning Center, they will receive notification via an email confirming the date, time and location of the course along with all the information needed to complete the prerequisite online component and obtain course materials.
