Servicios médicos

Baylor Scott & White Advanced Vein Clinic of North Texas offers expertise and treatment options conveniently located near you in Irving and Grapevine.

Conservative treatment approach: graduated compression

Our vascular physicians will recommend a treatment plan specifically tailored to your particular condition beginning with a conservative approach, such as compression hose, whenever possible.

Graduated compression hose compress the surface veins forcing blood to the deeper veins systems, reducing the symptoms associated with CVI, which include swelling, tired, aching and heavy-feeling legs.

Surgical treatment options for vein disorders

When compression hose do not alleviate the discomfort, we provide several surgical treatment options for your veins:

  • EVLA

The EVLA procedure is minimally invasive and is done in our office under local anesthesia. EVLA uses laser energy to deliver just the right amount of energy to the targeted tissue causing the vein to close and seal shut.

  • Ambulatory phlebectomy

For veins that are too large to be effectively treated with a laser or sclerotherapy, your doctor may recommend phlebectomy. This procedure is done in the office under local anesthesia. Through a series of small incisions, pieces of the veins are removed alleviating the unsightly bulging. Scarring is generally minimal. Ambulatory phlebectomy can sometimes be done in combination with EVLA.

  • Spider vein sclerotherapy

This procedure, which takes approximately 30 minutes, consists of injecting a solution into the spider veins. The solution causes an irritation to the vein wall, which results in the vein collapsing preventing blood from filling the vein. Each vein can respond differently and may require an additional injection to achieve the desired result. This is considered a cosmetic procedure and generally not covered by insurance.

Preguntas frecuentes

  • When should I seek vein treatment?

Many patients wish to eliminate varicose veins due to their unsightly appearance, but it is important to note the health benefits as well. Patients with varicose veins can experience pain, swelling, burning, itching or excessive tiredness. Untreated varicose veins can lead to blood clots, skin ulcers, inflammation or bleeding veins.

  • How are varicose veins treated?

Everyone's vein problem is different and unique, whether it is the types, severity or location of varicose veins. Fortunately, we are now able to create a customized treatment plan to fit each patient. EVLA is a great new alternative to painful and invasive "vein stripping." EVLA is a quick procedure, performed in the office, while you are awake and typically allows you to return to normal activities within two days.

  • Can eliminating a vein negatively affect my health?

No. Your leg contains many veins with functional valves that will maintain healthy blood flow following the elimination of the varicose veins with the EVLA treatment from BSW Advanced Vein Clinic of North Texas.

  • Are there any side effects with EVLA?

EVLA is a minimally invasive procedure that can lead to slight bruising, which often disappears in a matter of weeks. Most patients experience a 'tightening' sensation four days to a week after the treatment, which is entirely normal. Like any surgical procedure, EVLA involves a certain level of risk, and although rare, the potential for complications does exist. It is important to discuss with your doctor the potential risks of EVLA versus the risk of leaving your varicose veins untreated, and together you can decide the best course of action.

  • What is the success rate for EVLA?

Based on clinical data, EVLA has up to a 98% success rate for patients—much higher than older, traditional methods of varicose vein treatment. This level of success coupled with the speed of both the procedure and recovery leads us to believe EVLA will quickly become the preferred method for varicose vein treatment.

  • What is the cost for this treatment?

When necessary due to a medical condition, EVLA is normally reimbursed by most medical insurance carriers, including Medicare. We will work with you and your insurance provider to establish your insurance coverage for this treatment.

  • If I have varicose vein surgery, how long will I be out of work?

Most people can go back to work in two or three days after the procedure.

  • What will my leg look like after surgery?

You will have some bruising, the extent often depending on the severity of the varicose veins that are treated. This resolves in two or three weeks.

  • Will this one procedure be the last I'll ever have to worry about this problem?

We now know that many people have a genetic predisposition that may lead to new abnormal veins in the future. That is the reason that we recommend yearly follow-up exams to pick up small problems before they become serious.

About vein disorders

Varicose veins can occur or become aggravated for a variety of reasons, including hereditary traits, pregnancy, excessive straining, standing or sitting for extended periods of time, obesity, aging and trauma.

Within the human body, veins act as transporters for the circulatory system to return blood from your extremities to your lungs and heart. Valves within the veins are structurally designed to allow blood to flow in one direction, but these valves can become faulty, allowing blood to flow backward into the vein due to gravity, this is also referred to as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

This can cause veins to enlarge, thicken or become twisted. When this happens, varicose veins occur. Varicose veins can occur anywhere in the human body, but the superficial veins in the legs are the most commonly affected.

Spider veins are small superficial blood vessels that appear red or blue in the skin. They commonly occur in the legs but are also found in other areas of the body including the face.

They are usually the size of a large hair and can look like a “starburst” pattern or a tree branch pattern. They can often be a sign of underlying chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

Venous ulcers are one of the most serious side effects of longstanding varicose veins. These typically occur in the lower leg near the ankle. Venous ulcers are caused by high venous pressure or chronic venous insufficiency.
