Incision-free surgical removal of pituitary tumors

The pituitary gland is a pea-sized gland located below the base of the brain, behind the bridge of the nose. Pituitary tumors affect about one in 70,000 people.

The Pituitary Center in Dallas specializes in the incision-free surgical removal of tumors affecting the pituitary gland. Unlike traditional pituitary surgery, which typically involves an incision in the nasal cavity or face, the skilled team at the Pituitary Center is able to remove nearly all pituitary tumors—no matter the size or shape—through the nose using an endoscope.

Pituitary conditions treated

Our Dallas Pituitary Center typically recommends surgical removal of any pituitary tumor larger than one centimeter in diameter. Tumors less than one centimeter may be monitored through non-invasive imaging procedures. Though depending on the tumor, it may also require surgical removal.

The Pituitary Center in Dallas treats both functional and non-functional tumors, and performs pituitary revision surgeries if previous procedures were unsuccessful.

  • Non-functional tumors

These tumors can interfere with hormone production in the pituitary gland and include microadenomas, macroadenomas and giant adenomas.

  • Functional tumors

These tumors secrete excess hormones. Prolactinomas, Cushing’s syndrome and acromegaly are the most common conditions/syndromes.

Pacientes reales. Historias reales.

Tara Richey had tumors on the pituitary gland deep inside her brain, causing serious hormone imbalances and keeping her from starting the family she so dearly wanted. She found an answer three hours from her Oklahoma City home at Baylor University Medical Center, part of Baylor Scott & White Health in Dallas. The surgical team at Baylor University Medical Center threaded an endoscope into Tara's nostril and removed the tumors through her nose. A week later, she was back in Oklahoma, and six months after that, she was pregnant. "I call her my miracle baby," says Tara.
