Risk factors for ectopic pregnancy

 Several factors may increase your risk of developing an ectopic pregnancy, including:

• Age: Women over 35 are at a higher risk for ectopic pregnancies.
• Smoking history: Tobacco use can increase the risk of an ectopic pregnancy. If you're pregnant or trying to conceive, consult a healthcare provider for help quitting.
• Previous ectopic pregnancy: If you've had an ectopic pregnancy before, you have a 10% chance of another, with risk increasing further after two or more.
• Endometriosis: Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, can create scar tissue that may block a fertilized egg from reaching the uterus.
• Infertility and treatments: Women who undergo fertility treatments like IVF have a higher risk, as embryos can move into a fallopian tube during implantation.
• Previous surgeries: Abdominal surgeries such as C-sections, appendectomies, or tubal ligations can increase the risk, possibly due to scarring.
• Pelvic inflammatory disease: STIs like chlamydia or gonorrhea can cause inflammation or blockage in the fallopian tubes, raising the risk.
• Using an IUD: While IUDs are effective birth control, if pregnancy occurs despite using one, there is a higher likelihood it will be ectopic rather than uterine.

How is an ectopic pregnancy diagnosed?

Your doctor will listen carefully to your symptoms and may perform a pelvic exam to determine the size and shape of your uterus. They might also perform an ultrasound scan and order blood tests to confirm the diagnosis.

Ectopic pregnancy treatment

There are three primary treatments for an ectopic pregnancy: expectant management (monitoring to see if the pregnancy resolves on its own), medical management and surgery. The right treatment depends on your symptoms and when the ectopic pregnancy was found.
