Baylor Scott & White PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Vasicek Cancer Center aims to expose and develop our residents with coaching, modeling, and facilitation, to the expanded pharmacist's role in directly impacting patient care while preparing them for a PGY2 and BCPS certification
Baylor Scott & White -Vasicek Cancer Center, in conjunction with Texas A&M University Irma Rangel College of Pharmacy, offers an ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency designed to provide a broad experience in hospital pharmacy practice.
Our residents focus on the comprehensive care of patients through evaluation and intervention of medication orders, interdisciplinary rounding, antimicrobial stewardship, transitions of care, education, and research.
PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on the Doctor of Pharmacy education and outcomes to contribute to developing clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification and postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
We accept one resident each year.
Curriculum
About the program
- Residents complete 13 rotations from julio 1 through junio 30
- Required rotations are four weeks in length
- Residents may not exceed one-third of their experiences in a specific disease state or population (e.g., oncology)
- Opportunities for our residents:
- Antimicrobial stewardship participation
- Teaching certificate through Texas A&M Irma Rangel College of Pharmacy
- Manuscript writing program for publication
- Write and present an ACPE-accredited CE
- Attendance at multiple research and pharmacy conferences for networking and learning
- Ability to choose a variety of electives to design learning experiences to your interest
- No On-Call
- Code response training
- Multiple mentors in a variety of areas
- Multiple co-residents in a variety of fields
For residents to successfully graduate from the program, they must:
- Achieve 87% of ASHP residency objectives by the end of the residency year
- Complete an Institutional Review Board-approved research project
- Participate in poster presentations at ASHP Midyear, Baylor Scott & White Health Research Day, and HOPA Conference
- Create a manuscript of publishable quality
- Deliver an ACPE-accredited presentation to Baylor Scott & White pharmacists
- Present one project to system Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee

- Coordinated program with Texas A&M University Irma Lerma College of Pharmacy for Teaching Certificate
- Provide one lecture and assist in the Pharmacotherapy Lab with P3 students at Texas A&M University Irma Lerma College of Pharmacy
- Assist with APPE students on rotations at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple
- Precept IPPE students on rotation for 3 weeks
- Provide in-services to healthcare providers

Application requirements
- Have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from a fully ACPE-accredited college of Pharmacy within the United States or equivalent experience
- Have a license in good standing to practice Pharmacy from a recognized State Board of Pharmacy or in pursuit of and eligible for licensure eligibility in Texas within 120 days of start
- Enrolled in the ASHP Match Process
- Have a strong interest in clinical practice at a teaching facility

Stipend and benefits
Residents and fellows are classified as full-time employees of Baylor Scott & White Health.
In addition to our competitive stipend, we offer our residents a full menu of employee benefits. We help offset the cost of many of these benefits; others are options you can choose to pay for yourself.
Here is a selection of benefits we provide:
- Salary is $56,000 for PGY1 residents.
- The benefits package includes health, dental, life insurance and staff discounts.
- Residents accrue 15 days of paid time off (PTO), which includes vacation, holiday, sick leave, and interview leave beyond the allotted five days, and professional leave not sponsored by the program.
