The PGY2 Emergency Medicine resident functions as an integral member of the Emergency Medicine team in order to acquire practical clinical experience

The purpose of this program is to develop confident, well-rounded emergency medicine clinicians prepared to serve as leaders in clinical service, research, and teaching.

The PGY2 Emergency Medicine program was initiated in julio 2021 and is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). We currently accept one resident each year.

About the ED at Baylor University Medical Center

The BUMC Emergency Department (ED) is a state-of-the-art 85 bed facility staffed by the best and brightest emergency services personnel in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. The BUMC ED averages over 100,000 visits per year. Patient acuity is high as demonstrated by a 26.6% admission rate with a 4.3% critical care rate.

Critical care selectiverotation (1 month, 4-5 weeks):
  • Cardiothoracic Intensive Care
  • Medical Intensive Care
  • Surgical-Trauma Intensive Care

Elective rotations (1 month, 4-5 weeks):

Education and teaching


Residents have the opportunity to provide multidisciplinary teaching in a variety of platforms including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Emergency Medicine Resident Conference
  • Emergency Medicine Nursing Residency Orientation
  • Emergency Medicine Providers Meeting
  • University of North Texas Integrated Pharmacotherapy of Critical Care and Toxicology Course

Residents are required to provide a 45-minute ACPE accredited CE to the pharmacy department.

Residents will have the opportunity to mentor and precept PGY1 residents or pharmacy students at least once during the residency year.

Research and project management


The EM PGY2 resident will serve in a lead role to develop and complete an original research project. The project will be presented as a platform presentation at ALCALDE Southwest Leadership Conference in the spring of each year. A written manuscript is required to be submitted to the program director prior to completion of the program and is highly encouraged to be submitted for publication.

Other projects include, but are not limited to:

  • A policy or guideline review or development
  • A medication-use evaluation or quality improvement project

Staffing and on-call


Staffing:

The resident will participate in longitudinal staffing approximately every third weekend in the emergency medicine/internal medicine evening clinical shift. The resident will also staff one major holiday in the emergency department.

On-call program:

The resident will serve as a remote Manager On-Call to review and respond to daytime and evening requests for non-formulary and high cost medications. The resident will participate in this program in one-week intervals approximately every 6-7 weeks.

Leadership opportunities


The EM PGY2 resident will participate in select hospital and emergency medicine committees throughout the year. This may include participation in the following:

  • Drug Shortage Committee
  • Code Blue Committee
  • Pediatrics Committee
  • Stroke Steering Committee
  • Pharmacy Residency Committees (e.g. Wellness, Research, Seminar, Preceptor Development)
  • Others based on resident’s interest
