¿Qué es la pericarditis?
La pericarditis es una inflamación del pericardio, una cubierta elástica similar a un saco que rodea el corazón.
El pericardio está formado por dos capas de tejido fino con una pequeña cantidad de líquido entre ellas. Protege al corazón de infecciones y del roce con los tejidos circundantes cuando late, lo que puede causar irritación. Cuando el pericardio se irrita, se inflama y se desarrolla la pericarditis.
Tipos de pericarditis
Existen diferentes tipos de pericarditis, con variaciones según cómo se desarrolle:
- Infectious pericarditis: Developing as a result of a viral, bacterial or other infection.
- Traumatic pericarditis: Developing as a result of trauma to the chest, such as after a car accident.
- Idiopathic pericarditis: Developing without a clear-cut or definitive cause.
- Constrictive pericarditis: Scar tissue develops in the pericardium, causing the tissue to thicken and lose its elasticity. This type may lead to long-term issues resembling Insuficiencia cardiaca.
- Effusive-constrictive pericarditis: When fluid builds up in the pericardium.

The symptoms of pericarditis vary based on its type. It is categorized into different groups depending on the symptom pattern and duration.
Pericarditis aguda
The most common symptom of acute pericarditis is sharp, stabbing Dolor de pecho in the middle or on the left side of the chest. Pain may radiate to one or both shoulders. Other symptoms may include:
- Coughing

Factores de riesgo de pericarditis

¿Cuáles son las complicaciones de la pericarditis?
- Pericardial effusion: Occurs when fluid builds up in the pericardium.
- Constrictive pericarditis: Occurs when the pericardium becomes thick and stiff. This can happen due to inflammation or scarring, making it harder for the heart to fill with blood properly.
- Cardiac tamponade: Occurs when fluid builds up in the sac around the heart and puts pressure on the heart, making it difficult for the heart to pump blood effectively. This is a medical emergency.
¿Cómo se diagnostica la pericarditis?
Para diagnosticar la pericarditis, el médico le preguntará acerca de su historial médico, incluidas las lesiones, enfermedades o infecciones recientes. También le pedirá que describa sus síntomas y si hay algo que los alivie o empeore.

Tratamiento de la pericarditis
Con tratamiento, la mayoría de las personas se recuperan completamente de la pericarditis sin complicaciones.
El tratamiento varía según la causa, la gravedad y el tipo. Los principales objetivos del tratamiento son:
- Disminuir el dolor
- Reducir la inflamación.
- Tratar la causa subyacente cuando se conozca
- Esté atento y prevenga las complicaciones
Si su cardiólogo puede descubrir qué está causando su pericarditis, es posible que recibir tratamiento para esa afección sea todo lo que necesita.
Si se desconoce la causa, el tratamiento puede incluir medicamentos para reducir la inflamación o controlar los síntomas. Es probable que el cardiólogo le recomiende reposo y restricciones de actividad.
Si la acumulación de líquido en el pericardio afecta el funcionamiento del corazón, es posible que necesite una cirugía para drenar el exceso de líquido. A menudo, los cirujanos cardíacos pueden hacer una incisión en el pericardio y permitir que el líquido drene hacia el abdomen.
