Costs and financial considerations
The recipient’s health insurance covers medical costs related to living kidney donation, but you may be responsible for some out-of-pocket expenses. These can include travel and lodging costs and any lost wages due to time off work.
Federal programs, like the National Living Donor Assistance Center (NLDAC), along with support options from transplant centers, are available to help ease these financial burdens. NLDAC offers reimbursement for travel and living expenses needed for the evaluation process or donation itself. Eligibility for this assistance is generally based on income and citizenship requirements. Additionally, NLDAC and other programs may help reimburse you for travel, lodging and lost income while you’re recovering from surgery.
Financial coordinators and social workers can discuss your unique circumstances and help connect you to available programs and resources.
