Our Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology fellowship is a one year fully accredited and commended program in the heart of Central Texas
The Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Baylor College of Medicine Temple Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship is a one-year, fully ACGME accredited and commended program. Our goal is to train expert clinicians able to safely and smoothly perform the full range of cardiothoracic anesthetic procedures, enhanced by particular skill in perioperative echocardiography.
We hand pick two fellows annually from a competitive, national pool of applicants. Our graduates are highly recruited for jobs in both academics and private practice, and frequently become leaders in the operating room and the board room.
Ours was the first academic anesthesiology program in Texas to implement real-time 3D TEE. Building on this foundation, we remain dedicated to echocardiography education and implement both didactic and hands-on techniques within our comprehensive curriculum. The echo board results speak for themselves: 100% pass rate and average score in the 80th %ile nationally.
As the largest not-for-profit health care system in Texas and one of the largest in the United States, Baylor Scott & White serves 41 counties through 52 hospitals, more than 1,200 access points, more than 7,100 active physicians, more than 52,000 team members and the Baylor Scott & White Health Plan.
Curriculum
About the program
Fellows begin the year working one-on-one with CT faculty experiencing the full gamut of open and minimally invasive cardiac procedures. The remainder of the year is spent supervising residents with progressing degrees of responsibility and autonomy under the close direction of the faculty. This allows fellows to gain experience as a solo practitioner as well as training in supervision and teaching, all under the supervision of attending faculty.
Transesophageal echocardiography is performed daily throughout the year. Fellows routinely personally perform roughly 450 TEEs each year, in addition to reviewing additional studies. This extensive hands on experience, combined with personalized teaching both in and out of the OR, as well as the option for dedicated elective time in echocardiography, produces a truly unique training experience.
Formal lectures are held weekly and are supplemented by "chalk talks," short informal CT discussions covering high-yield TEE topics.
Our large referral base allows fellows to experience advanced clinical medicine while living in a town with minimal traffic and a welcoming small-town atmosphere.
Rotations
In addition to clinical care rotations in the cardiothoracic ORs, fellows have one month of cardiothoracic ICU care and two weeks of perfusion technology.
Electives involving cardiology, pulmonology, critical care, echocardiography and research are also available. Other rotations may be created to suit the individual needs of each fellow.
Procedures
We perform the full range of cardiothoracic and vascular surgical procedures including advanced heart failure therapies such as ECMO, VADs and heart transplants, as well as minimally invasive procedures, endovascular procedures and advanced interventional cardiology structural heart procedures.
We are an early adopter and high-volume TAVR center, and were the first academic anesthesiology department in Texas to institute real-time 3D TEE imaging. Our graduates are prepared to enter both academics and private practice.
