Curriculum
Introducción
Early in training, residents maintain direct communication with other senior staff members and residents and share decision making responsibilities with the podiatric faculty with respect to treatment and recommendations.
Initially, residents see patients with the members of the faculty and, as competency and proficiency increase, begin to see some patients independently.
Residents have individual desk space with 24-hour access to online services. All medical charting, imaging, labs, etc. are electronic and can be accessed via computer. Residents also have access to a medical library where searches and article retrieval can be done online or on campus. The onsite medical library is supported by both Scott & White and Texas A&M Health Science Center. Articles can be sent electronically or by mail.

Rotations
Endocrinología
The resident will work with faculty endocrinologists and an endocrinology fellow caring for endocrinology patients in the clinic and in the hospital. Familiarity will be developed with respect to diabetes and calcium-phosphorous biochemistry in particular. Full participation in the endocrinology conferences is expected.
Anesthesia
Participation under the supervision of senior staff anesthesiologists will include participation in the pre-operative and post-operative assessment of surgical patients as well as participating in the administration and monitoring of anesthesia. Familiarity will be developed with respect to anesthetic agents and methods in the establishment of a good knowledge base of appropriate anesthesia care. This experience is divided between the anesthesia pain clinic and the outpatient surgery center.
Medicina de emergencia
The emergency medicine service is staffed by board certified emergency medicine faculty. There are also residents working toward full qualification in emergency medicine as well as residents from various other services who may be rotating in the facility. The podiatry resident will participate in patient care under the guidance of senior staff and will participate in triage and treatment of cases that present for care. This will include participation in the care of patients with a large variety of medical problems and is not intended to be focused solely on foot pathology.
Radiología
The radiology department has a teaching file available for study of diagnostic evaluations of various pathologies. The radiology faculty consists of senior staff fully qualified as radiologists with a variety of special interests represented. An emphasis on diagnostic modalities for the osseous and soft tissue structures of the lower extremity will be reflected by development of familiarity of plane radiographs, tomography, CT scans, MRI scans and other similar technology.
Cirugía Ortopédica
Podiatry residents will participate on the orthopedic surgery service under the guidance of faculty members who are all board certified in the specialty. Attention will be given to the musculoskeletal system in general and the development of diagnostic and treatment programs in the field of orthopedics. Participation will include clinical duties and surgical participation, as well as hospital care of orthopedic patients. This rotation occurs in each year of the podiatry residency and covers general orthopedics, trauma service and foot and ankle clinic.
Pathology
This service covers both anatomic and clinical pathology. Under the direction of board-certified specialists, you will participate in the diagnostic services relating to the evaluation, interpretation and correlation of specimen analysis. This will include histology, microbiology, serology/immunology and toxicology.
Psicología
Psychiatry and behavioral medicine addresses the illnesses that affect our most human qualities: disorders of thinking, feeling and behaving. This rotation will teach you to better understand these illnesses and how they impact other aspects of healthcare delivery. This is a hospital-based consult service rotation.
Dermatología
Podiatry residents will perform and interpret the findings of a thorough problem-focused history and physical exam, including: problem focused history, neurologic examination, vascular examination, dermatologic examination and musculoskeletal examination.
Cirugía General
Residents actively participate in general surgery, which includes surgical evaluation and management of non-podiatric patients including, but not limited to, understanding management of preoperative and postoperative surgical patients with emphasis on complications, enhancing surgical skills such as suturing, retracting, performing surgical procedures under appropriate supervision, understanding surgical procedures and principles applicable to non-podiatric surgical specialty.
Enfermedad infecciosa
Residents perform and interpret the findings of a thorough problem-focused history and physical exam on patients being evaluated for an infectious disease process, including problem focused history and, where appropriate, neurologic examination, vascular examination, dermatologic examination and musculoskeletal examination.

Each resident is expected to actively participate as the primary investigator or work closely with the primary investigator in a research-funded project.
Our Biostatistics Department, which is headed by doctoral-level biostatisticians, provides a variety of statistical analyses and assistance in the design of appropriate investigational models.
Our Publications Office in the Research and Education Division offers assistance to Baylor Scott & White Health staff, medical students, residents and fellows in preparing their manuscripts for submission to journals, preparing grant applications (internal and otherwise) and formatting syllabi for continuing medical education presentations.
