¿Qué es el índice tobillo-brazo?
El índice tobillo-brazo (ITB) es una prueba de cribado no invasiva diseñada para detectar la insuficiencia arterial, que es la reducción del flujo sanguíneo a través de las arterias de brazos y piernas. Una prueba ABI ayuda a su médico a determinar si un estrechamiento (u otra restricción) en una arteria o vaso sanguíneo está reduciendo el flujo sanguíneo a sus extremidades y ayuda a identificar su localización y su gravedad.
Por qué se hace
The ABI test helps detect cardiovascular conditions, primarily peripheral artery disease (PAD). Your doctor may recommend an ABI test if you have risk factors for PAD. Risk factors may include:
- Edad 65 o mayor
- Type 2 Diabetes
- A family history of PAD, heart disease or Carrera
- Alta presion sanguinea or Colesterol alto
- Antecedentes de tabaquismo o consumo de otros productos del tabaco
Su médico también puede recomendarle una prueba ABI si padece claudicación, que es un dolor en la pantorrilla, las caderas o los muslos que se produce al caminar o moverse pero que desaparece tras el reposo. La claudicación suele estar relacionada con la arteriopatía periférica.
Cómo prepararse para una prueba del índice tobillo-brazo
Lleve a la prueba ropa holgada y cómoda. Los pantalones cortos pueden facilitar a su profesional sanitario la tarea de ponerle y quitarle el manguito para la tensión arterial de la parte inferior de la pantorrilla. Siga tomando la medicación que le hayan recetado a menos que su médico le diga lo contrario. No podrá someterse a una prueba ABI si tiene una fractura o una herida en los brazos o las piernas, así que hable con su médico si ha sufrido una lesión reciente.

Para determinar su valor ABI, su proveedor divide las mediciones de presión en los tobillos por las mediciones de presión en los brazos. Los valores se enviarán a su proveedor de referencia, que revisará los resultados de las pruebas y le recomendará los siguientes pasos adecuados.
Según la cifra de su prueba del índice tobillo-brazo (ITB), sus resultados pueden mostrar:
- No artery blockage (1.0 to 1.4): If your ABI is in this range, you probably don’t have peripheral artery disease (PAD). But if you still have symptoms, you might need another ABI test after exercising.
- Borderline blockage (0.90 to 1.0): You may have early signs of PAD. Your arteries might be starting to narrow, but blood flow isn’t blocked yet. Although the ABI is very accurate, you may get a normal reading even if you have symptoms of PAD. If that’s the case, your doctor may recommend other tests to confirm or rule out a diagnosis.
- PAD (less than 0.90): Results lower than 0.9 suggest PAD. The lower the number, the more severe the PAD. You might need more tests, like an ultrasound or angiography, to check the arteries in your legs.
- Calcification/vessel hardening (higher than 1.4): ABI values above 1.4 indicate a calcified vessel. This means you have plaque buildup in your arteries, causing them to harden.
