More than 57 years ago, pre-eminent vascular surgeon, Jesse Thompson, MD, launched only the second Vascular surgery Fellowship in the country at Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC). More than 124 fellows have graduated from the program and gone on to provide vascular surgical care to patients the world over.

Baylor Heart and Vascular Hospital (BHVH), where the 1st year fellows train for 12 months during fellowship performed 2,496 vascular cases in Fiscal Year 2021. This included 96 TCAR procedures making the hospital one of the top 10 in the United States for these types of procedures. Additionally, BHVH is connected to BUMC, which is among the top 10 heart transplant programs in the nation for volume having completed 68 heart transplants in FY21. The hospital was designated by U.S. News and World Report as a high performing hospital for heart failure and received the Platinum award for excellence in life support.

The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano (THHBP), where the 2nd year fellows train for 12 months during fellowship performed 1,185 vascular cases in Fiscal Year 2021. THHBP was recognized by U.S. News and World Report as a high performing hospital for heart bypass surgery, aortic valve surgery, aortic aneurysm repair and transcatheter aortic valve replacement along with being named as a Best Hospital for Cardiology and Heart Surgery in 2021-2022 and 2022-2023. The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano also was only one of two facilities in the US who successfully acquired the new "Vascular Verification" designation from the American College of Surgeons and the Society for Vascular Surgery in the recent pilot program set out by these societies for comprehensive vascular care.

We accept two fellows per academic year.

    The fellowship is divided into two primary rotations at BHVH and THHBP.

    1st year Vascular fellows are primarily at BHVH. During this time, all surgery cases are distributed among the vascular fellows and the senior general surgery residents rotating on the vascular teaching service.

    2nd year Vascular fellows are primarily at THHBP. During this time, the fellows are primary on all vascular surgery cases. The 2nd year fellows also see patients at clinic and have designated office time.

    The caseload includes:

    • Extracranial cerebrovascular reconstruction

    • Aortic reconstructive procedures

    • Renal and mesenteric reconstructive procedures

    • Lower extremity revascularization

    • Endovascular procedures

    • Aneuerysm repair

    • Peripheral vascular obstructive surgery

    The program also provides exposure to hemodialysis access procedures, sympathectomy, thoracic outlet decompressive procedures and vena caval interruption.

    • Vascular conference

    • Aortic conference

    • Texas vascular video conference

    • Basic science conference
