The Foot and Ankle Surgery Fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center, part of Baylor Scott & White Health, is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
The emphasis of the one-year program is on patient care, clinical problem-solving and surgical expertise.
We accept three fellows each year.

Curriculum
About the program
Our fellowship is divided in four areas: research, clinical practice, surgical procedures and teaching. Fellows conduct clinical and basic science research projects in the Baylor Motion and Sports Performance Laboratory.
Fellows participate in all aspects of clinical care of patients with foot and ankle diseases and disorders. This provides valuable experience over the course of the fellowship because fellows have the opportunity to follow patients from their outpatient visits all the way through surgery.
Clinical training is provided in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery, with particular emphasis on the following:
- Lower extremity (knee, ankle and foot) sports medicine injuries
- Achilles tears and disorders
- Bunions and toe deformities
- Ankle and knee articular cartilage injuries
- Post-traumatic foot and ankle deformities
- Foot and ankle arthritis
- Diabetic foot disorders
- Our fellowship is extremely active with multiple opportunities for surgical experience. Fellows participate in operative and non-operative aspects of all adult foot and ankle care.
In addition, fellows gain experience correcting foot and ankle disorders from systemic diseases such as diabetes, neurological disorders and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as trauma and reconstructive procedures. They are trained in complex procedures and treatments beyond the practice of most general orthopedic surgeons.
Investigación
Our fellowship provides a comprehensive curriculum with in-depth exposure to the clinical management of orthopedic foot and ankle patients and ample opportunity to perform basic science and clinical research.
Fellows are given the opportunity to enhance existing research skills with extensive exposure to critical data review, methodology and study design, as well as access to the Baylor University Medical Center Motion and Sports Performance Center.
Fellows gain experience and knowledge evaluating and assimilating scientific evidence and analyzing practice with the intent of improving the quality of care and implementing change for the future practice of foot and ankle surgery.
Our foot and ankle team has been on the forefront of research in the field for the past 25 years. Through the use of the gait laboratory at the Baylor University Medical Center Motion and Sports Performance Center, along with extensive clinical data, physicians on our medical staff have helped make advances in:
- Total ankle replacement
- Treatment of ankle and foot arthritis
- Management of foot and ankle sports injuries
- Diabetic foot problems
- We continue to drive the field of foot and ankle forward presenting our data in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at national and international meetings.
