Thank you for choosing Baylor University Medical Center, part of Baylor Scott & White, for your upcoming surgery. It is our privilege to care for you.
During this time of quarantine, your safety is our first priority. We’ve scheduled your surgery in an area of the hospital, entirely separate and removed from patients with/or suspected of an infectious disease.
In keeping with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, our goal is to reduce unnecessary trips from your home prior to surgery.
There are
two steps to hospital admissions: Registration (the administrative paperwork) and Preparation/Testing (the clinical testing). The purpose of the two-step process is to ensure you are well prepared for surgery or a procedure before you are admitted.
This is a team approach so you may receive multiple calls beforehand asking for additional, or verification of, health and financial information.
Preparing for Surgery
We’ve arranged for most of the pre-surgery process to happen online or by telephone by working with two teams:
-
Registration Team (administrative paperwork)
-
Nursing Team (clinical testing)
The purpose of the two-team process is to ensure you are prepared for surgery before you are admitted to the hospital. Our goal is to ensure that the day of surgery runs as smoothly as possible.
Registration Team
Please visit
BSWHealth.com/DallasPreReg to complete forms that assist with your hospital admission, insurance paperwork, and payment arrangements.
Items that will assist in the process:
- Insurance card and driver's license/identification
- Name of physician scheduling the surgery/procedure
- Date of surgery
- Emergency contact information (name, address, telephone number)
The Registration Team will then call to make arrangements for the following:
- Scanning of driver's license and insurance card
- Signing consent forms
- Finalizing financial arrangements
If you have questions, or would like to pre-register by phone, please call 214.818.9700 or 1.877.810.0372 to speak to a representative from the Business Services department.
Nursing Team
A nurse from Pre-Admission Testing will document your current and past medical history by telephone. A Nurse Navigator will also call to arrange for necessary laboratory and screening requirements. For your safety and that of our staff and physicians, COVID-19 testing will be performed 48 hours before surgery. After completion of your test, you will need to self-quarantine until your surgery.
Items to your pre-admission testing appointment:
- Identification or driver's license
- A personal mask to wear into the office
- List of current medications, over-the-counter medicines, and vitamins, minerals or herbs that you take
Before you arrive for surgery: Self-monitoring safety
Following your lab testing, you should continue to self-quarantine until surgery to help protect yourself and prevent exposure to people who have or may have been exposed to a contagious disease.
- Monitor for fever by taking your temperature twice daily (once in the morning and once in the evening) and remaining alert for cough or difficulty breathing.
- If you experience fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, weakness, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting and/or loss of smell, immediately call your doctor, or our Pre-Admission Testing office at 1.214.820.6200.
Evening before surgery
Your surgeon will provide instructions regarding eating, drinking and taking medications before surgery for you to follow. An anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist will also contact you before your arrival to discuss the benefits, risks and alternatives associated with anesthesia.
To avoid delays in your surgery:
- Follow instructions from your surgeon and anesthetist
- Do not shave or wax near the surgical site
- Plan for a family member or friend to drive you home after surgery
Parking at the hospital is available in garage 4. If you need assistance getting into the building, please call 214.608.0466. You’ll also be provided with a mask to wear inside the hospital if you do not have one.
Please bring the following items:
- Identification or driver's license and advance directive
- Storage cases for the following items, if worn: Contact lenses, dentures and hearing aids
Please remember to leave valuables at home and remove all jewelry before you arrive.
One family member or visitor will be allowed to accompany you to the surgery waiting area. Following the completion of your surgery, your guest will be allowed to come see you in recovery. If the surgery requires an overnight stay on an inpatient floor, your visitor will be asked to leave at that time.
Surgeon's Office
Your surgeon will advise you when to arrive at the hospital; how they would like to you prepare; advise you on eating before surgery and medication restrictions.
Pre-Admission Testing
Documenting your current and past medical history is necessary prior to surgery. You will receive a telephone call from a Pre-Admission Nurse with important instructions and information.
