Our comprehensive one-year program is tailored for physicians who are passionate about the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease
The Preventative Cardiology Fellowship offers hands-on clinical experience with leading specialists, exposure to advanced therapies like lipoprotein apheresis and dyslipidemia treatments, and opportunities for impactful research. This one-year, Texas Medical Board–sponsored program is ideal for Internal Medicine graduates seeking in-depth training in lipid metabolism disorders, along with the prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases.

As an active lipid apheresis center, the fellowship will provide training for conducting and managing patients undergoing lipid pheresis. Therefore, our fellowship will provide comprehensive education and training designed to provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors for the most expert practice of lipid management and preventive cardiology.
By the end of training, the fellow will:
- Understand the pathophysiology of lipid disorders and atherosclerosis in both coronary and non-coronary vascular territories.
- Manage complex and inheritable lipid metabolism disorders and their clinical manifestations.
- Develop novel treatment strategies for lipid metabolism related disorders.
- Gain experience in ongoing clinical and translational research in areas of lipid metabolism and cardiac/vascular disease conditions.

40 patients per week in an inpatient and outpatient setting. Up to 5 Lipoprotein apheresis procedures per month.

Training of fellow will be accomplished through outpatient and inpatient cardiovascular prevention consultation, research, and publication activities.

The research program associated with this fellowship is designed to provide meaningful cardiovascular research experiences with focus in the areas of lipid management, peripheral artery disease and coronary artery disease. The research experience provides both research and training with a faculty mentor.
Specific research domains include
- Core laboratory analysis
- Precision medicine
- Health disparities
- Large-data analysis
- Clinical trials.
There are opportunities to participate and present at research meetings, seminars, workshops and national conferences. The fellow will be responsible for overseeing clinical research related to hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, peripheral artery disease.
There will be an opportunity to become a principal investigator and/or apply for related research grants through this fellowship.

How to apply
Applicants must have completed one of the following:
- Internal Medicine Residency
- Medical Biochemistry Fellowship
- Cardiovascular Diseases Fellowship
Additionally, applicants must hold an MD or equivalent degree.
Currently, we are only able to sponsor a J-1 visa for those who require a visa.

In order to be considered for the Preventive Cardiology fellowship program, a compensated fellowship, applicants must submit the following materials:
- Universal application

- CV
- Three letters of recommendation
- ECFMG certificate (if applicable)
- USMLE and/or COMLEX scores (1,2, and 3)
